SPOTLIGHT: Rob Ferree (President of Bowman Development)
How long have you been working for Bowman Development?
It will be 5 years in October.
Where did you work at before Bowman Development?
After graduating from James Madison University I immediately went to work at Grove Manufacturing Company (now Manitowoc) in Shady Grove. I spent 25 years in different sales and marketing positions mostly international and left the company as Vice President of Asian Pacific and Latin America. I then spent 5 years working as an Independent Representative for an Australian and Malaysian Crane Manufacturer representing the United States. I reached a point in my career where I would have to move my family to continue. I decided that I wanted to stay in the area and I took the position as Business Development Specialist at the Hagerstown Washington County EDC. Throughout my 7 years at the EDC I became Deputy Director and learned the value that a professional economic development organization has to a local community. It was there where I met Don Bowman and was given the opportunity to join him and his team.
What does your job entail?
I mainly concern myself with the leasing of current properties and the development and leasing of new projects that the company develops or invests in.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy working with people and putting together deals that are mutually beneficial. I also enjoy trying to keep up with Mr. Bowman.
What do you enjoy most about this company?
I enjoy its history and its beginnings. This company is very fast paced and I enjoy the owner’s constant desire to continue to develop properties.
Do you have any suggestions for individuals wanting to get into this line of business?
Start at the ground level, work hard and continue to learn as you move up an organization.
What property or project shows the most interest right now?
We always have different opportunities and project we are working on. Right now the projects that have the most excitement to them are located in Downtown Hagerstown. Mr. Bowman always in the back of his mind has the desire to help with the revitalization of Downtown. The current projects include the Urban Educational Complex between BISFA and the Maryland Theatre and how it ties into the complete Urban Renewal Project. Another exciting project is the renovation of the Masonic Temple, which Bowman Development recently purchased, located beside the Bulls and Bears Downtown Complex
What do you like to do in your free time outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
